2024 Colonial Color Run and Costume Contest

Join us for another great Colonial Color Run!  Costumes are encouraged, and prizes will awarded.  Run or walk through all, or part of, our one mile course and have red, yellow and blue color thrown at you as you pass by!  Limited to 100 participants, cost is  $15.00 per person, swag bags with T-shirts, wigs and glasses will be provided to those that sign up.  Click below to register. Meet the Curator : Tea and Questions

Join us for a free program on the veranda entitled “Tea and Time with the Curator”.  Peter Hayes will be available to answer any questions visitors have about the Hall and the Constable history. Stop in briefly or stay for the whole thing.  Tea and refreshments will be available just like in the days of the Constables!
2nd Annual Lacrosse Shoot-out with a visit from The Oneida Nation!

Lacrosse players from the Oneida Nation will be joining us for “Skills and Drills”! They will start off with a very short presentation on the history of lacrosse, an overview of the game, and a quick demonstration. Then they will work with participants on different skills and drills. People of all ages (and not just lacrosse players) are welcome to the Hall for this wonderful event and lacrosse players of all ages are encouraged to participate with the Oneida athletes in the Skills and Drills.  All of the above is free to attend.  After the Skills and Drills, we will have the children’s shoot-out portion. This is for kids 12 and under and costs $10.00 to enter. The first 50 to sign up for the Shoot-out will receive a commemorative medal for the event, and it also includes a tour of the Hall.
Oneida Nation’s Jessica Farmer Visits with Artifacts

Jessica Farmer, Cultural Programs Coordinator at the Oneida Indian Nation in Oneida, NY will visit with us on the Oneida Nation.  She will also bring some artifacts to share and discuss. Watch for more details.  Below is her bio….. Jessica Farmer, Cultural Programs Coordinator at the Shako:wi Cultural Center (Whose father is Isaiah Farmer, Onondaga Turtle Clan) is a storyteller, artist and cultural knowledge gatherer. Born on the Buffalo Fields at the Onondaga Jessica was brought up listening to her father’s traditional Haudenosaunee legends and lore. All legends and lore have traditional teaching within the tales. Jessica’s mother, Katherine, was the Oral Historian for the Oneida Indian Nation. Katherine often brought Jessica with her to work where she fostered a desire for history in her young daughter. Continuing to learn from traditional title holders, knowledge keepers, and Storytellers, Jessica expands her knowledge of Haudenosaunee Cultural and History at every chance.
75th Anniversary Party

Join us as we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Hall being open to the public!  It was 75 years ago that the Constable Hall Association was started, making the historic home a museum.  There will be free tours from 12-2, food available to purchase from Rusty’s Hot Dog Cart, music with Rebecca Miner 12-2:00, and Chris Thomas and his wonderful Smoke Dancers will perform from 2:00-3:00.  This is a wonderful program, where the audience is also encouraged to join in the fun!  At 3:00, curator Peter Hayes will be presenting a short program on the importance of General Lafayette to the Constables and the Oneida Nation, and the wonderful relationship the Constables had with the Oneida as well.  Something for everyone!  We are very thankful that this event is being sponsored by Stewarts Shops and Community Bank.
Chris Thomas and the Haudenosaunee Nation Smoke Dancers

Chris Thomas (Onondaga) and his Smoke Dancers provide an entertaining and educational Haudenosaunee social dance exhibition. Social dances, such as the round dance, rabbit dance, old moccasin dance and canoe or fishing dance, are for the enjoyment of all people. Chris serves as both the MC and singer, leading the dancers in their skillful and often fast-paced dances that honor the traditions and culture of the Haudenosaunee. Chris often invites guests to join in the dances and experience the world of Haudenosaunee dance first hand. Each dance is dependent upon different drumbeats, different chants and specific foot movements that each individual dancer can interpret into their own style. One of the most popular social dances is the smoke dance. The smoke dance is a derivation of the war dance and was originally only danced by men. It was a fast dance that was designed to exhibit the men’s skill and stamina. In later years, the women devised their own unique style of the dance.

Help us celebrate our Christmas in July!! Mary Ellen Platz returns for her “Kids Yoga, Constable Style”!  People of all ages are encouraged to attend this fun, easy yoga event.  It involves Constable and Christmas poses, games and a bit of trail running as well!  Just $5.00 per person and includes a tour of the Hall.

A wonderful family event with lots of fun Christmas festivities.  There will be wood block printmaking (Christmas cards?), cross stitch for kids, ornaments to make, crafting potpourris, historic games and crafts, and music!  From 10:00 to 11:00  Mary Ellen Platz returns with her Constable/Christmas Kids Yoga.  It includes poses and games from the history of the Hall, and also includes a bit of trail running!  Check back for more details.
Harvesting and Using Your Herbs

Sharon Stewart from Garden Thyme Herbs will present a program on harvesting and using herbs from your own herb garden.  Participants will leave with recipes, ideas, and some sample products they will make on site.  Cost is $15.00 which will go towards the historic garden fund. Constable Hall Arts and Crafts Fair & Cruise-In

  The Constable Hall Association is thrilled to announce the return of the 52nd Annual Arts & Craft Fair and Cruise-In Event, Father’s Day, June 16, 2024.  This years’ event promises to be filled with a wide variety of activities and attractions for the whole family to enjoy. Indulge in delicious homemade pies, baked goods, BBQ chicken, and food from local food trucks wile you explore the handcrafted merchandise, collectables, and antiques from our talented vendors. Take a leisurely stroll through the newly refreshed grounds, admiring the beautiful surroundings and browsing the unique items for sale. Don’t miss the opportunity to check out the vintage vehicles on display at the 51st annual Cruise-In, and be sure to take a tour of the historic Constable Hall with Executive Director Loraine O’Donnell and Docent Eileen Dailey. Learn about the rich history of the Hall and its’ significance in our community. The Rebecca Miner Band will provide entertainment at 11:00AM while the historic Lowville Village Band will be performing from the Veranda at 1:00PM, both providing a delightful musical backdrop to your day. Planting an Herb Garden

Birdwalk at the Hall

Linda Gibbs from the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust will lead us on a birdwalk throughout the trails and grounds of the Hall.  This free event is great for people of all ages.  We will start in the Servants Quarters and she will teach us many facts and secrets to “birding” in our area. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars, camera and/or a phone.
Grounds Work Day

Build a Bluebird House in the Servants Quarters

We have 10 bluebird house kits available from John Rogers, co-founder of the NYS Eastern Bluebird Society.  He came and did a wonderful presentation on bluebirds and their habitats last spring. His kits are all pre-cut, pre-drilled, and come with everything needed, even the screws and nails! For just $15.00 you can reserve a kit to be built with us here in the Servants Quarters.  All you need is a small Phillips and regular screw driver and a hammer. It even comes with directions on hanging it up to better encourage bluebirds to your yard. It should only take an hour, and is also great for kids.  If you are interested, don’t forget to reserve your kit.  We only have 10!
Easter Egg Hunt and Coloring Contest

Snow Snake Toss

People of all ages are invited to the hall to try their hand at “Snow Snake”, an Oneida Nation winter game, which involves throwing a wooden “snake” down a trough of snow to see how far it goes.  Thanks to some “Friends of the Hall”, we will have a few on hand to use, or make and bring your own to share with us and try it out. Constableville Snow Festival

Cabaret Coffee and Dessert Concert

Lantern-Lit Snowshoe Trek

Join us for a Lantern-Lit Snowshoe Trek around the Constable Hall grounds.  Bring your own lantern (the older the better!) to light your way through our trail.  It will be less than a mile and take less than an hour, so people of all ages are encouraged to attend.  If you don’t have a lantern, bring a flashlight or head lamp, and we will have a few extras if needed.  If the snow  isn’t cooperating, we will hike it!  Also please remember, no bathrooms will be available.
Christmas Caroling at the Hall with Twas Proclamation

Join us at the Hall from 1-3:00 for a wonderful celebration of “Twas”!  Mayor Sam Brown has officially proclaimed the 23rd of December to be  “Twas the Night Before Christmas Day”. We will have some wonderful Christmas caroling for young and old as well as lots of other fun activities.  Bring your family for Christmas photos, enjoy hot cocoa and cider, jingle bell crafts, and a free drawing for a 200th ornament!  Remember it will be outside, so dress for the weather, and no bathrooms will be available.

Twas the Night Before Christmas 200th Anniversary Celebration

The Constable Hall Association in partnership with the Greater Thousand Islands Literacy Council and the Constableville Library present the “Twas the Night Before Christmas 200th Anniversary Celebration” party on Sunday, November 12th from 1PM-4:30PM at the Constableville Library on 3158 Main Street in Constableville, NY. The guest of honor for the celebration is author and historian Pamela McColl who is touring the country to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the classic poem with her book, Twas The Night-The Art and History of the Classic Christmas Poem. The author calls the masterpiece of juvenile fiction the most often read, recited, reprinted and collected work in the library of English literature and considers the 200th milestone of this warm-hearted poem cause for celebration.   Constable Hall is believed to be the inspiration for the classic poem. Poet Clement Moore visited his widowed cousin Mary Eliza Constable and her five children many times during the Christmas Holidays. This celebration begins at 1pm with kid’s crafts, Christmas Karaoke, a visit from Santa, hot chocolate, cider and snacks. At 2pm Ms. McColl will give a talk about the history of the classic poem with a question-and-answer session afterwards as well as a book signing. Constable Hall Annual Membership Dinner

Carriage Rides at the Hall!

Come to the Hall and enjoy free horse and carriage rides from 12:00 to 4:00, thanks to funding from Constableville Tomorrow!  Chrissy Southwick from Hunter Hack Farm will be providing the horse and carriage for us.  We’ll start at the first field we use for parking, and head down the driveway and around the Hall.  Just like they did in 1818!

“Totally Twas” Kids Yoga and Games with Mary Ellen Platz

Mary Ellen Platz returns for another fun Kids Yoga and Games with a totally Christmas twist.  The cost is just $10.00 per family ( members are free) and it includes souvenir Santa hats and a tour of the Hall.  Mats will be available if needed. (We will have a lot of fun all throughout the grounds, as it will be a VERY active program!)   This activity is great for kids of all ages, and is our kickoff for our “Week of Twas” to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the famous poem “Twas the Night Before Christmas”, so plan on being here for “Twas in August”!
A Week of “Twas” Celebration!

Join us for a week of “Twas” Celebrations!  It is the 200th anniversary of the publication of the famous poem “A Visit from St. Nick”.  As we all know, Constable Hall has long been recognized as the birth place of this famous poem due to his cousin Mary Eliza living here, etc.  We are thrilled to celebrate this auspicious occasion with five days of Christmas fun, songs, activities and crafts.  Plan on joining us for this once in a lifetime celebration!  We have “Totally Twas” Kids Yoga and Games with Mary Ellen Platz, a free ornament raffle (by just commenting on the facebook post of it), an ornament station in the Servants Quarters, and an outdoor movie night on the front lawn with s’mores, cocoa, and A Muppet’s Christmas Carol, to name just a few!  (Watch for more details)
“Talking Tea AND Making Tea Cup Bird Feeders” – Part Two of Tea and Talk Series

In honor of the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party…. Part Two-“Talking Tea AND Making Tea Cup Bird Feeders” Sunday, August 13th at 1pm. Part Two of our “Tea & Talk” series will feature tea maker Sharon Stewart giving tips on how to make your own special blend of tea, AND… Don’t know what to do with those tea cups and saucers Grandma left you? Make a beautiful bird feeder! Bring your own cup and we will show you how to make them into a one-of-a-kind memento. Constable Hall will provide the supplies and you provide your favorite tea cup set! Perfect outing for Mothers, Daughters and Grandmothers! Donations will be gratefully accepted as admission for this event.
Lacrosse Shoot-Out!

Boys and girls up to age 12  are invited to the Hall for a lacrosse shoot-out!  This involves shots on the goal from different distances, and the ones with the best aim wins!!!  We will have ages 8 and under shooting at ten yards, ages 9/10 will shoot from fifteen yards and ages 11/12 will shoot from 20 yards.  Prizes will be available to the top three shots. We have medallions for the first 50 kids that register.  The goal will be set up on the front lawn, next to the field where the Oneida Nation used to camp!   Just $10.00 to enter, and the cost includes a tour of the Hall.  Contact the Hall for more details or to sign up. Participants are encouraged to also bring some black tea to be included to our donation to the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.  (The Boston Tea Harbor Museum is having a 250th celebration and “dumping tea” in the harbor to commemorate it.)  We will even have some quill pens to use to put their “John Hancock” on a poster for it.  
Colonial Color Run and Colonial Costume Contest

Join us for a wonderful “Colonial Color Run” at the Hall on July 30th.  The Constable Hall Association, in partnership with Constableville for Tomorrow is excited to be holding this delightful fun-filled event for young and old.  Registration will start at 8:00 and the “Run/Walk” will start at 9:00.  It will entail a one mile course, with 4 color stations.  The $10.00 registration fee includes a swag bag containing a shirt, gray wig, medallion, and more, etc.   Colonial garb is encouraged (white wigs, tri-cornered hats, time period glasses, etc.) and participants will be “colored” with red, white and blue!  Participants are encouraged to also bring some black tea to be included to our donation to the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party.  (The Boston Tea Harbor Museum is having a 250th celebration and “dumping tea” in the harbor to commemorate it.)  We will even have some quill pens to use to put their “John Hancock” on a poster for it. “The Evolution of American Tea Culture” – Part One of “Tea & Talk” Series

In honor of the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party …… Part One–“The Evolution of American Tea Culture” Sunday, July 16th at 1pm. Talk given by Executive Director Loraine O’Donnell. From its roots starting with the Dutch settlers in the Americas to the sweet tea of the American South, Tea continues to play an important role in American Culture. Join Executive Director Loraine O’Donnell for Sunday Tea on the Veranda at Constable Hall on Sunday, July 16th at 1pm. As part one of the “Tea & Talk” series, guests will sip tea and drink in the beautiful view on the Veranda while listening to the history of tea and how it has changed over the decades.  Participants are encouraged to bring and show off their own special cup! Families and kids of all ages are invited to join us at the Hall for another “Kids Yoga Constable Style” with Mary Ellen Platz.  Participants will enjoy fun yoga moves and games with a “Constable Twist” as we learn some of the Hall trivia. Mats will be provided if needed.  If it rains, we will be on the veranda, so come rain or shine and enjoy the view and the gardens.  The cost is just $10.00 per family and includes a tour of the Hall for everyone!

“Bluebirds – and More”

Join us in the Servant’s Quarters for this wonderful powerpoint presentation on the life and nest management of the Eastern Bluebird.  John Rogers, co-founder of the NYS Eastern Bluebird Society, will inspire us with beautiful photographs, sights and sounds of bluebirds and all sorts of nature.  (The program is free but donations are appreciated.)

“Lit for Christmas” Event

People are welcome to come to the Hall for free photo ops when it is “Lit for Christmas”!  We will have candles in the windows, three different outside trees lit and wreaths and garland!  Come on over and take Christmas/winter photos anywhere on the grounds. The grounds are always open for use, but the indoor lights and trees will only be on during this time.  (5-7:00pm)
Christmas Carols at the Hall Event

Join us for some wonderful  Christmas caroling outside the Hall.  The veranda will be decorated, our trees will be lit, we’ll have some wonderful performers, and we can all sing, sing, SING!  It will be great fun for young and old (with some fun surprises!)  We even will have a limited amount of craft kits for children to make their own jingle bell ornaments to play while we sing.  A nominal donation will be appreciated to cover the cost of the projects.

The Constable Chronicles Continue!   The Constable Hall Association and the Tug Hill Commission are pleased to present a fifth installment in the Constable Chronicles webinar series.  This fifth installment takes us from Constableville into the Adirondack wilderness.  The five children who grew up at Constable Hall in the early 1800’s were all outdoor- oriented.  By the 1830’s they were ranging through the western Adirondacks from Big Moose to Blue Mountain Lake.  They were some of the first non-native people to see the area.  Learn how these Tug Hill people experienced the pristine wilderness and then saw it change rapidly with the arrival of a newer generation of nature seekers.
